Here is the picture of the $25 PC:

And now the same connected to a screen and a keyboard…

This computer, created by David Braben a game developper, once mass-produced could provide a computer to any student around the World.

The computer runs Linux, has a 700 Mhz ARM processor, 128 MB of memory on an embedded SD card and displays decent graphics with OpenGL 2.

Some examples of products and technologies from very big companies that failed…

Virtual reality

Popular in the 90, the virtual reality technology was the one that should the most radically change the world. Equipped with a headset and a combination, the adventurer had to move in an artificial world and interact with beings and things in this world.
The first experiments have stumbled on a physiological problem: the human body supports badly moving in a virtual world.

But the VR still gave birth to something: the Wiimote allows to interact with a game per body movements, as if we were in the action. And Kinect is even better.
The promise is always remaining.

Voice Recognition

Much has been said about voice recognition, and software were sold to help write articles verbally, the voice being converted into text.

However, despite the increase in computing power, this field has not progressed. Utilities that use the procedure in a very primary still seem boring to the user.

Apple Lisa

A revolutionary computer buyer but too much expensive.
We can not talk of failure, Apple succeeded in drawing the conclusion and designed the Macintosh whose success is global and has also inspired Windows.

The firm has also experienced other failures that after improvements are transformed into success. One example of the Newton personal assistant and his successor, the iPhone.

10 GB Ethernet

A technology for transmitting data at high speed that is not imposed, primarily because Web technologies slow data processing.

Firewire

This connector to replace the USB that was too slow. But manufacturers have responded and developed the USB 2 twenty times faster, and more universal and then USB 3 even faster again. Firewire therefore become unnecessary.
eSata also had little success due to a design flaw: it carries the signal, but not energy. This could be corrected with Power eSata.

Kin from Microsoft

Itanium

A 64-bit processor server designed by Intel. The lack of compatibility has hampered its adoption by businesses.

Zune and Kin

Microsoft wanted to make a competitor to the iPod with Zune. But lack of applications had lead to little success and lack of success to few applications.

The Kim phone even if distributed by a big carrier, Verizon, failed even more miserably. Only 503 units were sold. It just did not have any form of usefulness for users.

Windows Vista

Many companies buy computers with Vista and replace it with XP, faster, simpler. Vista is cumbersome and slow.

Vista incorporates security features for annoying the user.
Frequent message alerts are irritating. You can not even use it on the netBook which brings XP beside Linux!

Conclusion

Between the poorly design and the excessive optimism with regards to future progress, sources of disappointment are numerous.
But even next to successful technologies ignored by the article (eg mobiles), from technologies that do not promise, however it comes out something and that is why the world is changing quickly.

A partnership agreement was signed between Microsoft and Nokia. The mobile phone manufacturer put on Phone Windows 7 as the main operating system on its future products.

Nokia also has a special agreement that allows it to customize WP7 while it is forbidden to other manufacturers when they install it on one of their models. It will participate in the development of the system.

Android does not allow Nokia to differentiate itself from other manufacturers, said the CEO, hence the choice of Windows. A custom WP7 will allows.

Faced with the slow development of MeeGo and with a Symbian system which does not support the touchscreen, the choice of an external OS was needed.

From 1 April 2011, Nokia will be divided into two structures: Smart Devices and Mobile Phones.
The first, Smart Devices, will use both WP7, Symbian and Meego on advanced mobile units.
The second will address emerging markets with the aim of providing to all mobile phones at low prices.
